bell curve of technology adoption

"Hello, my name is Megan and I'm a technology laggard."

We've all studied this bell curve in a marketing class.

I'll tell you a secret - I work in high tech, and I'm a technology laggard.

For years people have told me that because I work in the technology industry, I have to have the newest phone, the newest TV, the new smartwatch, the newest everything. I think they're wrong. Yes, I need to be educated on the latest and greatest but I don't think chasing my tail adopting the newest trends is critical. Because of my laggard-ness, I bring a unique perspective to the typical technical environment.

You know why I'm a technology laggard? I expect technology to work for me, not that I have to work for technology.

This is controversial, but I think I'm well-suited to UX research because of my "technology laggard" categorization. As a UX Researcher, I don't expect anything of my users. But, I do have high expectations for the products I build.

Products must be so simple that even a laggard will get excited.
